Our Orchids

CYMBIDIUMS

Approx 60% of the orchids grown are cymbidiums. Most of our cymbidiums plants are not available elsewhere. About 20 new mericlones are put into the lab each year that are exclusive to us. We are forerunners in our hybridising program producing many wonderful peloric and pendulous types. We also are working on new colours including spotted, picotee, splashed and others.

 

CATTLEYAS

Approximately 20% of our orchids would be cattleyas. They are grown in a large, cold glasshouse of over 1000 square metres. We do some hybridising, specialising in the blue cattleyas. Most of our cattleyas are sourced from Taiwan with many also coming from some of the top breeders in Australia including Cattle Creek Orchids and Aranbeen orchids.

 

PAPHIOPEDILIUMS

10% of our orchids would be paphiopediliums. There are grown in a slightly heated glasshouse. We do some of our own breeding but many of our plants are sourced from overseas including the following top nurseries Ching Hua Orchids / Taiwan, Yamato-Neon Orchids / Japan, Paphanatics / USA, Orchid Zone / USA, Papa Aroha Orchids / NZ, Orchid Inn / USA plus others.

 

ONCIDIINAE

We have a small selection of plants that are grown with our cattleyas. Plants are mostly sourced from Taiwan.

 

PHRAGMIPEDIUMS

We have a small range from which to choose from including some species. It is extremely difficult to get good plants and we find them also difficult to hybridise. We are always on the look out for more good material.

 

AUSTRALIAN NATIVE DENDROBIUMS

We have a small range, mostly concentrating on the bigger flowering types. Plants are sourced from the top Australian hybridisers in the eastern states.

 

ZYGOPETALUM

Occasionally we buy in stock but most of our plants are hybridised by us. We specialise in the very dark coloured flowers and some new intergenerics.

 

SPECIES

We always have some species in stock especially in the paphiopedilium and cattleya groups. We do a little bit of hybridising in this area but normally buy flasks from overseas to get new material and recently found species.

 

PHALAENOPSIS

We grow our plants on a hot bed. Plants are sourced from Taiwan for they are the world’s leader in this genus.

 

LYCASTES

We have some top show bench varieties which we try to work with. It is difficult to get these to hybridise but we keep trying. Our plants in flask are now being sourced from a top hybridiser in Japan.

 

PLANTS FOR SALE

Plants can be purchased in flask (bottles of about 25 small plants), community pots (plants are one to years out of flask and usually 5 to 6 plants are in each community pot), single small plants (about two years out of community pot) up to flowering size. Prices will depend on the size of the plant.

• Mericlones are plants that have been reproduced in the laboratory so that the resulting plants when they reach maturity and flower will be identical to the plant that they originated from. Also abbreviated to a clone.
• Hybrids and seedlings develop from cross pollinating flowers. The outcome is uncertain but they will be influenced by both parents. They are like children from two parents.

LABORATORY

We have our own laboratory and do most of the seed germinating for the nursery. We do a small amount of contract work if you have a seed pod you want us to germinate.

 

OTHER SUPPLIES

 

• Potting Mix – The pine bark we sell is from Aus-Gro. It is available in 25l and 50l sizes. Coconut husks from Orchid Mate. Sphagnum moss 150g and 3Kg sizes. Cork for mounting plants.
• Pots and Trays – We carry Port Pots, pots and trays from Easy Orchids and pots from Premium Plastics.
• Fertilizer – We have slow release fertilizer available as 500g. Liquid fertilizer by Growth Technology.
• Stakes, Name Labels, Hangers and Pot Stands are also available.
